Aston Villa players wear black armbands in tribute to Jlloyd Samuel

Aston Villa and Middlesbrough players wore black armbands in tribute to Jlloyd Samuel during the second leg of their play-off semi-final at Villa Park. 

Samuel, who played for Villa between 1998 and 2007, died in a car crash in Cheshire on Tuesday.

A former England U21 international, Samuel made 199 appearances for Aston Villa before joining Bolton.

He was capped twice by Trinidad and Tobago at senior level. 

Samuel, 37, later played in Iran and was most recently player-manager of non-league side Egerton.

There was a minute’s applause prior to tonight’s game to remember Samuel.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Paul Merson, who played with Samuel at Villa, said: ‘Thoughts go to his family and his kids. He was such a lovely kid. I played with him.

‘I couldn’t believe how old he was if I’m being honest… 37. When I was here he was in the team every week, so he must have been 18 or 19.

Former Aston Villa defender Samuel died in a car crash on Tuesday. He was 37.

‘He was well ahead of his time to be playing as a wing back in those days – it’s hard enough as a 28-year-old, let alone a kid playing that way.

‘It’s a sad loss. He was just a lovely kid – I couldn’t talk highly enough of him – and a great pro.’

Manchester United winger Ashley Young, who previously played for Villa, was among those to pay tribute to Samuel on Twitter.

He wrote: ‘Absolutely gutted to hear the news of the passing of Jlloyd Samuel. Took me under his wing when I joined Villa and helped me settle. Such a good guy on and off the pitch and a truly good friend.’

Aston Villa said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of our former player Jlloyd Samuel at the age of just 37 in a car accident. Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this very difficult time.
